The Staying Power of Some Nights

Whenever I listen to music, my preferred way to listen is to switch on the randomized play option, as this usually gives me a wonderfully diverse playlist. However, the first song on the playlist is always one that I specifically pick out myself. Through this action, I always know what song is my current favourite, as I will invariably seek out that song to start things off. My choice usually changes every couple of days, but one song has retained that position for well over a month now, and I have to say, I see no signs of it relinquishing its title anytime soon.

“Some Nights” by the band Fun. is one of the most refreshing songs I’ve heard in months, and I’m not really sure if I will ever get tired of it. I first became aware of Fun. when their hit single “We Are Young” stormed the airwaves early last year. It was an instant favourite of mine, as I was impressed with the vocal range and style of lead singer Nate Ruess, as well as how well the song pulled off the power ballad without becoming just another generic pounding anthem. Instead, it was anything but generic, and it kept up a steady presence on my playlists for months. I liked it so much, that I wondered if I would ever like another Fun. song to that extent.

Thankfully, I didn’t have to worry, because as soon as I heard “Some Nights”, I knew without a doubt that Fun. was a band worth my time and investment.¬†Whether it’s the pounding drum beat, the soaring vocals, or the achingly poignant lyrics, “Some Nights” is simply wonderful on all levels. Having recently seen Fun. on Saturday Night Live, it was clear that they are one of those great live bands, and therefore I know I will be first in line to get a ticket the next time they come through town. Until then, I’ll be listening to “Some Nights” for the thousandth time.
